BEFORE Bachelor’s Hall Estate, the largest cocoa estate in Jamaica,
suffered extensive damage after Hurricanes Ivan (2004) and Dean (2007). Most of the crops were destroyed resulting in soil erosion, as a result of previous unsustainable land practices. Over 100 persons lost their jobs and cocoa yields were reduced from 2000 boxes to 500 boxes.

AFTER The Rural Enterprise Agriculture and Community Tourism (REACT) provided technical assistance and training in proper
pruning; shade and land management; the replanting of cocoa trees; the building of two sheds for the drying and storing of cocoa for
export; and a facility for processing cocoa. Cocoa production has
already increased and employment opportunities are now available for the residents of three communities in the parish of St.Thomas.
